On May 25, George Floyd, an African-American man, died in a hospital in Minneapolis after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee on his neck. This improper law enforcement incident later turned into nationwide demonstrations, protests and riots. Police stations were burned and shops were looted. More than 10 states have dispatched militia to suppress them, and more than 40 cities have imposed curfews. My colleague lives near downtown Oakland, California, and the angry crowd looting BestBuy (an American 3C store) can be seen from the window of her house. At the same time,
I also saw some scenery other than the confrontation, such as the police knelt down on one knee to pay tribute to the deceased Floyd, the African-American people collectively protected the lone police, and the people carried guns to guard the vulnerable businesses. If someone told me last year that the streets of New York would be emptied and people wouldn't be able to go out after 8pm, I would have thought the joke was quite humorous, Pricing but I can't laugh at all now, the word "curfew" that I have rarely heard since puberty, Now it has become a daily routine for many Americans. It's equally hard to imagine that the tipping point for this was Minneapolis. Minnesota is the largest Nordic immigrant state in the United States. The "Minnesota Nice" in the American population can probably describe some stereotypes: polite, conservative,
friendly, dislike conflict, calm, restrained. It was the Great Northern Wilderness where it snowed six months a year and was very suitable for introverts. It was the place where I spent the most important two years of my life. This post is not intended to be about events, race, human rights, I want to share my personal experience living and working in Minneapolis, and the perspective of nonprofits. What does America's "Great Northern Wilderness" look like? Minneapolis was the 6th most livable city in the United States last year , and veteran U.S.-based journalist Fan Qifei called it "a well-known progressive city." In my opinion, it is pure white.
